The Best Turkish Coffee for Okka, Tornado and Arzum Machines (the Electric Kanaka)

If you bought an electric Turkish coffee machine like Okka, Tornado or Arzum, the right coffee for it is very finely ground Turkish coffee — not espresso coffee, not filter coffee, and not coarsely ground coffee. These machines work on exactly the same idea as the regular kanaka, so they need a very fine grind for the coffee to dissolve in the water and give you the full Turkish coffee taste with the wesh (the foam) that everyone is looking for.

Seelaz Turkish Coffee is ground fine to around 90 microns — and that is exactly the grind the electric kanaka machine needs. That means you can open the bag and put the coffee straight into the machine, with no preparation and no extra grinding.

Why does the electric machine need a very fine grind?

The electric Turkish coffee machine heats the water and the coffee together gently until the coffee boils and rises. And for the taste to come out right and the foam to form well, the coffee has to be almost as fine as powder. If the grind is coarse, the water passes over the coffee without pulling the flavor and oils out of it, so the coffee comes out weak and with no foam, and you feel grains at the bottom of the cup. That is why a fine grind is not a luxury — it is the foundation of a successful cup in this machine, and if you get it right you will find a big difference in taste and aroma from the first time.

Why does Seelaz Turkish Coffee work well with Okka, Tornado and Arzum?

Seelaz Turkish Coffee is a 100% Arabica blend from Colombia, Ethiopia and Honduras, roasted in Cairo and ground fine specifically for the kanaka and electric machines. It has no added sugar, so you are the one who controls the sweetness to your own liking and to the liking of whoever is with you. And it comes ready ground, so you need no grinder and no effort — just put it in and start the machine. It is available in 125, 200 and 250 gram sizes, and the 250 gram pack makes about 35 cups, so it lasts you a good while with daily use without worrying that it will run out quickly.

And the advantage of it being roasted in Cairo is that the coffee reaches you while it still holds its aroma and taste, not after sitting on the shelf for months. This Arabica blend has a balanced taste that is neither too acidic nor too bitter, so what comes out in the cup is a rich Turkish coffee with foam, exactly as it is supposed to be.

Which type should you choose: plain, spiced with cardamom, or with mastic?

The choice is easy and all of them go into the machine the same way — it just depends on your taste:

  • Plain: the pure taste of Turkish coffee with no additions — suitable if you like coffee as it is, or like to add your own flavor yourself at home.
  • Spiced with cardamom: the classic Egyptian and Gulf touch, and the warm cardamom aroma that completes Turkish coffee. You will find it in the Flavored Coffee section.
  • With mastic: a distinctive flavor and a pleasant aroma, if you like the Levantine and Greek style of coffee. Try Seelaz Turkish Coffee with Mastic.

And if you are still a beginner and do not know where to start, start with plain Turkish Coffee to get to know the basic taste of the coffee, and then try the spiced one and the mastic one when you feel like a change.

How do you use the coffee in the electric machine properly?

The general rule for Turkish coffee: a cup of water + two teaspoons of coffee + sugar to taste. In the machine, you add water up to the marked line, add the coffee and the sugar if you like, and press the start button, and the machine does the rest on its own and gives you the coffee with its foam. If you like it strong add half a spoon, and if light reduce it a little — and the fine coffee lets you adjust the taste easily. And a small tip: wipe the coffee compartment in the machine after every use so it keeps giving you the same clean taste every time.

Why do espresso and filter coffee not work?

Espresso coffee is ground for a machine that works with pressure, and filter coffee is ground coarser for the drip method. Neither is designed for the kanaka, so if you use them in a Turkish coffee machine the result will come out wrong — either coffee with no taste and no foam, or annoying grains in the cup. That is why, if you have an Okka, Tornado or Arzum machine, always look for a fine "Turkish" grind like Seelaz's, and do not use any other grind. You can see the rest of the coffee types in the Coffee section.
