What is iced Americano?
Espresso over cold water and ice. Refreshing, low calorie, full of caffeine. The drink got its name from American GIs stationed in Italy after WWII who diluted strong espresso with hot water to taste like the drip coffee back home — the iced version is a modern Korean and Japanese cafe staple.
You'll need
- Espresso machine
- Tall glass (300–350 ml)
- Large ice cubes
- Cold filtered water
- 18 g fresh Seelaz espresso — Shop espresso roasts
Step by step
Fill glass with ice
Pack the glass two-thirds full with large ice cubes. More ice keeps the drink colder longer with less dilution.
Pour 180 ml cold water
Add cold filtered water over the ice up to two-thirds of the glass.
Pull a double shot
Brew 36 g espresso from 18 g of beans. Use a medium roast — you want body without the muting effect dark roasts get when chilled.
Pour espresso over the back of a spoon
To preserve the crema layer on top, hold a spoon over the water and pour espresso onto it. The crema floats beautifully.
Serve immediately
Don't stir before serving — the layered look is part of the appeal. Stir before drinking, or sip through the crema first.
Pro tips
- For a stronger flavor, chill the water and the glass beforehand.
- A pinch of salt in the espresso reduces bitterness, especially with darker roasts.
- Sparkling water instead of still gives an effervescent twist (Korean cafes do this).
