What is an iced latte?
An iced latte is two parts espresso and four parts cold milk, poured over ice. Simple in theory, easy to over-dilute in practice. The trick is using a strong espresso base and keeping ice large and slow to melt.
You'll need
- Espresso machine
- Tall glass (300–350 ml)
- Large ice cubes
- Cold whole milk or oat milk
- 18 g fresh Seelaz espresso — Shop espresso roasts
Step by step
Fill glass with ice
Use large, dense cubes — ideally clear cubes. Small ice melts in seconds and turns your latte into milky water.
Pour cold milk first
Fill the glass with 180 ml of cold milk over the ice. Filling first means the milk chills further on contact with ice.
Pull a double shot
Brew 36 g espresso from 18 g of beans (2:1 ratio). Use a slightly darker roast — brightness gets muted with cold milk.
Pour espresso over the back of a spoon
Hold a spoon just above the milk and pour espresso onto it slowly. This creates the photogenic layered effect.
Stir or sip layered
Stir to combine for a uniform latte, or sip layered for a flavor journey from dark espresso to creamy milk. Both correct.
Pro tips
- Sweeten the espresso while hot — sugar dissolves better. Or use simple syrup.
- For vanilla iced latte, add 5 ml vanilla syrup before milk.
- Oat milk holds up best for the layered look due to higher fat content.
